The history of the American and International orthopaedic medical community has yet to be collected and told. There are many stories on surgery - some on medicine, some on orthopaedics. Virtually none describe the worldwide contribution to this highly specialized field. The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons has committed to that effort through a member-driven initiative to interview members; collect information, photos and artifacts; and sort through existing historical documentation. In early 2008 at the 75th Anniversary/ Annual Meeting - the AAOS will unveil the “Anniversary Project” - a number of coordinated, multi-media projects, books, films, and exhibits celebrating 75 years of accomplishment. Created for the benefit of all AAOS members as well as the general public, these are being made possible through the generous support of our
Anniversary Project Sponsors.
Orthopaedic history is not, should not, be solely a collection of academic papers and medical treatises. The story of orthopaedics is woven through all of us: physicians, patients, nurses and our industry partners. We eagerly invite you to participate in our effort to document and preserve our legacy.
The website, web application really, is deceptively simple. There are four types of users, AAOS members, orthopaedic nurses, industry partners and public visitors. Industry partners, AAOS members and orthopaedic nurses all post to the same discussions. There are 12 primary "buckets" or topic areas. These are located in the "topics" tab or in the "specialty" tabs. In each area, users are invited to submit stories, respond to other users submissions, or answer "Questions of the Month" that will be updated regularly. The heart of the site is the "threads" or discussions that occur in each topic or specialty area. As in the rest of the site, all submissions are self- categorized and searchable by keyword, date and author. Finally, there are "working groups" of your colleagues "behind the scenes" in each topic area vetting submissions, republishing content, and metatagging content and building the database. Please visit repeatedly as the site changes and grows and encourage your colleagues to do so. If you have comments, problems or suggestions, feel free to email us at postoffice@15elm.com.
